BROTHERS Grant and Brett Wilkinson joined the South West Mini Moto club four months ago.

Now one of the Warrnambool-based siblings holds a state title and the other placed second in two classes at the Victorian Mini Moto Championships on the weekend.

Not bad for two teenagers who learnt their racing craft on dirt.

Grant, 15, circled the Lake Gillear track in the junior combined class.

After five rounds the Warrnambool College year nine student had accumulated four wins and a second.

Grant’s victory in the pointscore program made for a perfect debut on his midi bike.

“I didn’t really have a plan on the track,” the teenager said.“I just tried my hardest and had fun.”

Grant and Brett joined the local mini moto club after riding motorbikes in paddocks.

The brothers have put their skills to good use on the bitumen. Brett, 17, placed second in two classes on the weekend.

He was runner-up in the senior combined and senior cag.

South West Mini Moto president Brendan O’Donnell said his club was proud to host the statewide event.

“We were a little bit down on the class entries than we would have liked but we had pretty good junior fields,” he said.

Warrnambool rider Jason Heaver, who was returning from a six-month injury leave, cleaned up at the inaugural two-day titles.

He won the senior cag and senior combined.

Australian champions Con Mozzarella and Bill Sayers won the senior elite and class five events respectively.

In the junior sections, Warrnambool’s Ben Platt was best in the cag.

Dromana’s Luke Davis won the junior elite and Cardinia’s Tristan Harmer topped class five.
